Offering an incredibly rare late 1800’s Toile De Jouy spread. The spread is printed on linen. The toile is printed with
period pastoral scenes of men, women and children participating in a variety of recreations. Men playing with tops, riding
a teeter-totter while picnicking women and children and dogs watch the events. The print is crisp (indicating an early impression)
and the red is the original color, a shade virtually unparalleled today. The fabric is resilient and virtually unblemished
with a few minor spots & pinholes noticeable only with critically close scrutiny. The spread is strong and in fabulous condition.
The spread measures a liberal 78 inches long and 46.5 inches in width. Printed with roughly 37-inch wide plate, it is pieced
vertically with a 9.5-inch panel added to the left side. The print has a 36-inch repeat. The spread is pieced horizontally
at roughly 51 inches from the top. Making this spread even more appealing is the 6-inch Italian hand knotted fringe that adorns
all four sides of the piece. The fringe is in equally wonderful condition with no flaws noted. The spread is lined with homespun
linen on the reverse. The homespun is pieced as well due to the limitations of the loom size. The homespun shows evience of
period repairs and minor pin spots. The linen has enabled this textile to remain in such incredible condition over the years.
Scientists are currently speculating that linen contains natural antibacterial agents. This would explain how Egyptian mummies
retain their linen wraps for centuries. This is truly a rare and exceptional find. Most probably created for a fainting couch
or daybed. This piece is guaranteed an authentic Victorian Era French Toile De Jouy circa 1880-90’s, roughly 114 years
old and not a recent reproduction. This item would ideally be displayed in a guest room, a lounge or bed. Please contact us
